Daily Rec: The Chemical Brothers Are Like A Box Of Chocolates
Song: Out of Control
By: The Chemical Brothers
I’ve just bought the album Surrender, and to be honest I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. I’ve dabbled with the Chemical Brothers before - but up until now I’ve only bought the more recent albums (Push the Button, and We Are the Night). I have to say that I find their albums are (to quote a famous line) a bit like a box of chocolates… It’s a bit like when you lose the bit of paper from a tin of Roses and you have to delve in blindly, not knowing quite what you’re going to get.
Although I don’t consider Surrender to have quite as much ‘filler’ material as the other two albums I mentioned, there are still a few tracks that I’m not sure about. However, bitching aside Out of Control is a pretty good track! I’ve not really given the album enough time to sink in yet, but this track has really jumped out at me.
There are two things that really grabbed me in this track. Firstly the underlying synth that seems to run along all the way through the track. It’s a great base to build upon and that’s what’s been done really well in this track. Particularly effective if you listen to it through headphones there are weird synth noises and rhythmic effects popping in a glorious stereo fashion, which seems to be one very prominent characteristic of any Chemical Brothers song.
But what really stands out is the retro, old school house section at about 4:40 into the track. When that first jumped in I couldn’t stop smiling! It’s really reminiscent of traditional house music and has a very retro sound to it. It struck me as being very similar to Star Guitar. The only downside is it doesn’t last nearly long enough!
Overall the track is not quite as amazing as it could be, my love for it rests largely on the contrasting middle section. Oh and the subtle guitar melody that kicks in just before the end is pretty sweet too!
