Song: The Book of Heavy Metal [March of the Metallions]
By: Dream Evil
This track has to be the quintessential metal song. It’s got everything a metal song needs. Loud thrashing guitars, an anthemic chorus, ‘widdly’ guitar solo, high pitched vocals, a growling beat from the depths of hell and absurd lyrics. In a word, this song is ridiculous - or at least it would be if it took itself seriously. That’s why it’s so good - because the band are just having a laugh.
It’s a concept that can make most metal much more enjoyable. With the exception of Black Metal, you aren’t meant to take the apocalyptic lyrics and war paint too seriously. It just so happens that you end up with much cooler songs if you sing about Satan, sex and saxon warriors fighting in the mists of dawn - and you can’t do that in skinny jeans and a retro video game t-shirt can you!
So I present what I believe to be a perfect example of a metal song. Don’t read into its meaning or analyse it’s composers - just appreciate it for what it is, a bit of heavy metal fun!
