Daily Rec: Dream Theater with a hint of Passion!
Song: Hell’s Kitchen
By: Dream Theater
We’ve not had any prog for a while! So lets take a trip with Dream Theatre! Hell’s Kitchen has to be one of the best instrumentals ever. Ok, so it might not be as ‘proggy’ as it gets, but it’s just a nice song, you know? It has everything you could want from a Dream Theatre instrumental, some excellent musicianship, powerful melodies, complex rhythms and above all the ability to keep you hooked right the way through.
One of the things I admire most is the guitar work by John Petrucci. While this statement is true of most DT songs it applies especially to Hell’s Kitchen, he is great at shredding in a way that doesn’t turn me off. I can’t stand it when guitarists simply shred for 4 minutes solid. Ok, there’s a little bit of skill involved, and no I couldn’t do it – but it just seems to lack passion. That is something that oozes from this track though, passion.
An excellent song to immerse yourself in and I find it’s great if you give it a couple of plays and concentrate on individual instruments as you go through to get an idea of how well all the parts fit together to create the song.
