Daily Rec: Afterburner by Russ Chimes
To be honest I don’t think I can safely pick just one song to recommend to you by Russ Chimes… But seeing as that is kinda what I do here I’d better carry on in the same style! Therefore, I pick:
Afterburner
by Russ Chimes
Where to begin then… Well I was played some music by Russ on the last.fm radio while listening to the tag ‘French House’. Russ is not French, he is English, but his sound is definitely influenced by some of the big hitters of French House. Despite this he has managed to create such a masterfully unique sound I find it difficult to categorise it.
Inspired by a quote from a review I would say his work comes across as a mix between a Sega game, funky house, disco and filtered house - with a splash of cool added to top things off! Basically it’s a laid back, funky groove with some sweet lead synths.
Once again, as I noted in my recommendation of Mylo, I am forced to note the difference in attitude of current ‘French Touch’ artists and the English equivalent. Once again Russ Chimes’ material is far more laid back than say the cutting drones of Justice. Perhaps English artists are not quite as daring as their French counterparts - but I feel the two styles complement each other nicely! It’s good to have a mix of both in-your-face brutal beats and smooth, high-soaring lead hooks.
I can’t really grab the words to describe how much I like this guys work! It sounds so fresh, so happy, so clean and brilliant! Sadly only 3 songs are commercially available currently - and they are remixes via iTunes. Admittedly they are similar to his original work, and still very enjoyable. However, for me I would much rather listen to Afterburner and She’s Got the Heat via his myspace (www.myspace.com/russchimes).
Here’s hoping he finds a record label that will release his work soon! Until then I think I’ll have to spend plenty of time on the myspace!
